About the Artist:
From the first glimpses of Robert Balotsky's work as Buku, it was clear that the Pittsburgh native and graduate of Music Technology was a well-equipped architect of twisted, layered soundscapes. With a menacing grasp on sound design and music theory, this young producer combines deceptively simple and emotive melodies, laden with resounding low-end and intricate drum patterns. With a love of drums rooting from childhood, his work reflects his passion – emitting percussive elements only a trained ear could produce.
Stationed behind a kit since age 8, the drum-obsessed musician followed the progression of handling percussion duties for multiple bands throughout his adolescence. Once introduced to digital production, Buku took his techniques to stranger dimensions – and he's been pushing the boundaries ever since.
Championed by the likes of Diplo, hand-picked by Paper Diamond to work on his ‘Paragon’ project, selected by Brillz to contribute remix duties for ‘Retwonked’, called for collaboration with Tropkillaz and featured on Shade45’s ‘Sway In The Morning’ radio show, Buku has been paving a promising road over his whirlwind of a career.
His consistent work has placed him at the forefront of a new wave of rising talent amongst North American producers, earning him support from Bassnectar, Dillon Francis, Pretty Lights, Lunice, Bro Safari, Skism, Craze, Shiftee, and Kastle, among others. Seeing releases and remix features on imprints such as Never Say Die, Main Course, Slow Roast, and UKF's Pilot Records, as well as his recent contribution to Gravitas Recording’s ’Beat ALS’ compilation, Buku's reign has only just begun: haters beware.
